The Institute

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one of the premier institutions of national importance in higher technical education and basic & applied research. It was established in 1959 by the Government of India in collaboration with the German Government. IIT Madras is a township of about one square mile area located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. It is a residential institution with nearly 450 faculty members, 6200 students and 1000 administrative and supporting staff.
The self-contained IIT campus is located in a beautiful wooded land with flora and fauna, carved out of the Guindy National Park. The campus has about 300 species of trees and plants including native wild ones. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories. It is conveniently located at a distance of about 12 km each from airport and railway station.

Department of Engineering Design

The Department of Engineering Design was established in IIT Madras as its 16th Department with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and research. The Department launched the novel dual degree programme in Engineering Design with a view to providing the much needed leadership in this area. The first of its kind in the country, the programme constitutes a B.Tech specialisation in Engineering Design and M.Tech specilisations in Automotive Engineering and in Biomedical Design with a strong thrust on the modern practices of design.

Rehabilitation Bioengineering Group

the Rehabilitation Bioengineering Group, a team comprising physicians, health care professionals, engineers and basic scientists. This group works on the broad area of biomedical engineering, its application in healthcare product/ process development and technology Management.

Regional Labour Institute, Chennai

The Regional Labour Institute, Chennai was set up in the year 1960 with its Safety, Health and Welfare Centre located in a rented premises at Royapettah. All the activities and facilities of the institute were then consolidated in its own premises at1 Sardar Patel Road in an area donated by the State Government. The institute was formally inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri M. Bhakthavathchalam in the presence of the then Hon'ble Union Labour Minister Shri D. Sanjivayya and it serves the Southern States of the country.
